Preparing for a medical peel

On darker skin, preparation is not a formality: it determines how safe the procedure is. Three weeks, and one rule that is not negotiable.

By Dr Oumnia’s practice2 min read

A peel applies a solution that lifts the superficial layers of the epidermis. On intermediate to darker phototypes — the most common in Morocco — skin responds to that injury by producing melanin. Without preparation, that reflex can leave marks more visible than what was to be corrected.

What to expect

The session lasts around twenty minutes. The stinging is distinct during application and eases within minutes of rinsing or neutralising.

Depending on the depth, the skin flakes from day two to day five. This is not a side effect: it is the mechanism of the treatment itself.

Preparing, 72 hours before

Preparation starts three weeks before, not three days: gentle cleanser, a depigmenting cream prescribed at the consultation, and daily sun protection — including on overcast days and indoors.

Within 72 hours: stop retinoids, scrubs, fruit acids and waxing on the area. A patient who has not followed the preparation is offered a postponement, not a peel at her own risk.

What to tell us

Recurrent herpes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, isotretinoin treatment in the past six months, recent intense sun exposure, or a history of keloid scarring.

How the session goes

The skin is degreased, the solution applied in layers while watching the reaction, then neutralised or rinsed. The concentration is chosen for your skin: this is why the same peel name does not mean the same procedure from one patient to another.

Afterwards, and what to do

Do not pick at the flaking: that is how a scar is made. Rich moisturising, strict sun protection for several weeks, no hammam or swimming pool for a week.

When to call us back

Call in case of intense pain, blistering, weeping, or a brown patch appearing in the following weeks. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is far easier to treat when caught early.

None of the above replaces the prior consultation: it alone says whether this procedure is right for you, and on what terms.

This text is informative. It does not replace a medical consultation and is not a promise of results.
